VJ Home: Submissions & Advertising: Style Guidelines Guidelines for Authors The Vindobona Journal of International Commercial Law and Arbitration welcomes contributions from authors writing on international commercial law and arbitration. In preparing manuscripts, authors are asked to comply with the following: Main text Microsoft Word Template Copyright Abstracts STYLE PREFERENCES Headings Spelling Punctuation Italics Spacing Quotations Numbers and page numbers Quotation marks Umlaut Dates Abbreviations and Acronyms Footnotes Footnotes/References: Order for Bibliographic References Cases Journals Books Chapters Statutes Conventions Electronic Resources Guidelines for Authors Main text The text, including notes and bibliography, should be double-spaced. The full name and position of the author(s) should also be included. Generally, manuscripts should not exceed 6,000 words for articles and 3,000 words for case commentaries. The manuscript must be in Microsoft Word or WordPerfect format. Microsoft Word 7.0 or greater is our preferred format. Manuscripts will be received by the Editor-in-Chief in 2 ways: by e-mail to the address listed in the journal; or 2 hard copies with IBM compatible diskette which is clearly marked with the name of the file, word processing and the name of the author. Authors are responsible for ensuring the veracity of case names, citations and other references, and spelling. Microsoft Word Template A Microsoft Word template (.doc, 39 kb) for the Vindobona Journal is available via the Internet for those authors who would like to make use of it. Briefly, the following layout is used: Article Heading Font - Heading 1, Times New Roman; size is 12 point Main Text Font - Normal, Times New Roman; size is 11 point Main Headings Font - Heading 2, Times New Roman; size is 11 point; capital text Footnote Font - Footnote Text, Times New Roman; size is 9 point Footnote Numbering - Times New Roman; size is 11 point Copyright Manuscripts submitted to the Vindobona Journal of International Commercial Law and Arbitration should not be submitted to any other journal for publication without prior approval. The MAA will not publish material that has been published elsewhere except by mutual agreement with the copyright owner. Abstracts Manuscripts should be accompanied by an abstract of no more than 150 words. Authors are advised that this abstract will be printed in the journal as well as being published on the Vindobona Journal website. STYLE PREFEERENCES The Journal is published in English and spelling should be British rather than American. Language in the manuscript should be gender neutral. Headings Levels of headings in the manuscript should be clearly indicated. Spelling Standard English spelling and grammar (e.g. -ise/-isation endings, where the word can be spelt with either -ise or -ize endings; -re not -er ending) Punctuation Have a space after a comma (', and') Indicate points of omission using three points in square brackets with one space either side ( [...] ) Limit the hyphenation of words (where the word can be spelt with or without a hyphen, e.g. worldwide) Use en-rule (-) for elision (e.g. pp.78-9) and parenthetical dashes (e.g. ' ... reading properly - and then ...') Italics Do not underline words to indicate italics. Use italics. Italicise case names, Acts, Conventions, Treaties, Codes, book titles and the full name of a report or journal. Spacing One space only between words and after punctuation, including full stops One space after the initials of personal names (e.g. A. W. Smith) Quotations Single quotation marks should be used when indicating a quotation. Double quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes use '[sic]' where errors in quotes have been noticed for quotes, right indent with one-line space top and bottom from main text put punctuation outside quotation marks for incomplete sentences quoted Numbers and page numbers write out in full numbers less than 100, unless the context is overtly statistical or scientific, or units of measure are given; leave one space between quantity and measure (e.g. '2 in.') write out per cent unless it is given in a statistical context page numbers: insert one space after the 'p.' (e.g. p.5), elide following numbers except teens (e.g. pp. 4-8, pp. 9-34, pp. 12-14, pp. 23-5); use 'pp. 4ff.' for 'page 4 and following pages'. Quotation marks Single quotation marks should be used when indicating a quotation. Double quotation marks are used for quotes within quotes Umlaut Use 'ä' instead of 'ae', 'ö' instead of 'oe' and 'ü' instead of 'ue', e.g. Düsseldorf. Dates format: 13 December 1996 or Friday, 13 December 1996 en-dash to denote an exact twelve-month period (e.g. 1996-7) when referring to decades, there is no apostrophe between the year and the 's'. e.g. 1990s, not 1990's. Abbreviations and Acronyms abbreviations and acronyms should be spelt out in the first instance with the abbreviated form following in brackets, e.g.: Moot Alumni Association (MAA) use common abbreviations without full stops, e.g. UN Convention, UNCITRAL, USA spell out centuries, e.g. 'in the nineteenth century' Authors should use the following expressions: 'e.g.'; 'i.e.'; 'Article' at the beginning of a sentence and 'Art.' or 'Arts.' when appearing within a sentence; 'Section' at the beginning of a sentence and 's.' or 'ss.' when appearing within a sentence. Footnotes positioned at foot of page; separated from text by short rule; key number closed up to first word; each part of a reference separated by commas, within the footnote by semi-colons, conclude with full stop; single spacing in between footnotes (see below). Authorised versions of case reports should be used in footnotes When referring to a previous footnote, use 'fn', e.g. Please see fn 7.
