The
Journal
The Vindobona Journal of International
Commercial Law and Arbitration (VJ) is a bi-annual law journal
published under the auspices of the Moot Alumni Association
(MAA).
Founded in 1996, the Moot Alumni Association originates from the Willem
C. Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot as a community of
participants of this competition. Today, it has grown from a mere
organisation for alumni into a worldwide network for leaders in law
and business. The Association is responsible for major conferences
and publications on current issues in international commercial law
and arbitration.
Backed by a distinguished Board of Advisers
comprised of eminent academics and practitioners, the Vindobona
Journal focuses on current issues and development in international
commercial law and arbitration. The Journal is guided by the
philosophy of sharing information, opinions and thoughts on
developments in these areas of law, as well as including law updates
in the form of case notes on decisions from around the world. We
achieve these aims in two ways: (i) by providing the opportunity for
publication to young professionals, academics and practitioners and
(ii) by collaborating and sharing resources with universities and
institutions around the world.
As international trade
burgeons in the new millennium, international commercial law and
arbitration increasingly grows in importance for the business
community. The Vindobona Journal provides an excellent tool for
understanding and working through those the challenges presented to
businesses seeking to achieve efficient and successful cross-border
transactions.
Why "Vindobona"?
Vindobona
was the name of the settlement at the banks of the river Danube in
Roman times from which the city of Vienna evolved. It was chosen as
patron for the Journal for two reasons:
First, Vienna is the
domicile of the Moot Alumni Association and the city where the
Oral Hearings of the Willem C. Vis International Commercial
Arbitration Moot take place each year.
Second, the city of
Vienna has historically been closely connected to the unification
and harmonisation of both the law of international trade and the law
of arbitration: Here, the 1980 Diplomatic Conference was held that
led to the adoption of the United Nations Convention of Contracts
for the International Sale of Goods. Additionally, Vienna is the
seat of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law's
secretariat. UNCITRAL sponsored two important sets of rules in the
field of international commercial arbitration, the UNCITRAL
Arbitration Rules and the UNCITRAL Model Law on International
Commercial Arbitration.
